LOCUST ATTACK - THREAT TO FOOD SECURITY

Swarms of desert locust are descending ravenously in parts of East Africa,Asia, and the Middle East. They're roving through croplands and threatening livelihood & food supplies in a devastating barrage.



A SOLITARY CREATURE - Desert locust sometime share the solitary lifestyle of a grasshopper. In the solitary phase they occupy and breed in smaller regions. The usually live in the arid area of about 30 countries between West Africa and India.


GREGARIOUS BEHAVIOUR - When plentiful rainfalls and annual green vegetables develops, in such circumstances they shift completely from there solitary lifestyle to a group lifestyle, forming huge marauding swarms, Which is called the gregarious phase.

COUNTRIES AFFECTED - According to FAO, locust swarms are now developing across East Africa, Yemen, Iran, Pakistan, India - the are has been warned to be o "high alert" and their growth is threatening crops in India.

Countries like Kenya , Ethiopia, and Somalia continue to face an unprecedented threat.


Reportedly,for some farmers, spraying has come too late and many farmers across northern Kenya and beyond have lost everything to the swarms.

"Everyday, You get five, six, seven to ten swarms. If this continue we will be done. Our life will be done" says Farmer who runs a team of volunteers.

FAO WARNINGS - In the forthcoming rainy season in South Asia, the number of locust can increase 20 times.

Another generation of locust egg is hatching which can exacerbate an already poor food security in many countries.
